Athletic Qualification Standards

Natwest Island Games 2017: Gotland

Athletes who are interested in competing at the 2017 Island Games in Gotland should register their interest with the Athletics Team Manager, Seumas Mactaggart – seumas.mactaggart@btinternet.com. Athletes should meet the standards shown below, and provide dates, times /performances, and the names of the competition that performances were achieved, as they happen.

Athletics standards/ selection process

In a review of the standards, carried out in early 2016, there are now 2 standards – an ‘A’ standard, and a ‘development’ standard. See below.

The ‘A’ standard is generally based on times/distances from the Jersey Island Games 2015 that would have got an athlete through to a final or into the top 10 of the specific event.

On a whole the team selections will be made from the ‘A’ standards. There are potentially 2 places available in each event, and up to 3 in the half marathon. Selection will be made based on the best times / performances.

Please note though that achieving the ‘A’ standard does not guarantee a place in the Gotland 2017 squad, but will mean you will be considered. The athletics squad we plan to take to Sweden will be of a similar size to the one taken to Jersey – 23 - subject to standards being met, along with a management team of 3.

The team selectors may also consider athletes who have achieved the ‘development’ standard if it’s felt it will benefit the team, and the specific further development of that athlete. The development standard applies to U17 & U20 athletes, and those new to the event that they are competing in, irrespective of age, and is designed primarily as a stepping stone to the main ‘A’ standard.

Athletes are only expected to achieve their standard once and the performances must be from the 2016 outdoor season. Performances should be achieved by Monday the 3rd of October 2016.

All athletes must show a clear commitment to a training plan that is ongoing through to the games and beyond, and consistency in training and performance is key. For any athletes selected with the ‘development’ standard, it’s also important that we see a steady improvement in performance.

Athletes must be 15 years old on 1st July 2017, and 18 years old to be considered for the half marathon.

Standards must be achieved at an event recognised by Power of 10. Preference will be for performances that come from events where electronic/chip timing is used, but hand timed performances from an event that meets Pof10 criteria and with qualified timekeepers, will also be considered along with the athlete’s best electronic times.

Times/distances achieved must be legal. In road racing the particular performance must be on an officially measured course and within the legal elevation decrease as stated in the UKA & IAAF rule book.

At the time of team selection – October 2016 - each athletes’ fitness & form will be reviewed.

The selection team will also reserve the right to consider an athlete that has not achieved the standard within the given time frame if there are gaps in the team, between October 2016 and March 2017. Exceptions may be made depending on the individual athlete’s circumstances, as there may be legitimate reasons for them not meeting the standard (illness, injury etc). In these sort of cases athletes will need to present a good case to the selection team and prove their fitness. A case will then be put forward to the WIIGA committee for discussion.
